Chicken dinner submitted 2009.06.29 08:39 AM by Fallen viewed 2167 times

When I was a kid we had only four TV channels.
Yes, FOUR.

They were the big three networks, ABC, CBS, NBC and PBS. The Public Broadcast System was and is the home of the educational kid shows like Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers. PBS also fostered my love of shows like Dr.Who and Monty Python, but that's not important.

The point of this post is that they used to run short filler programs in between the big shows. There were no commercials on PBS back then so they had time to fill. One filler they used told stories and showed pictures of old paintings or stamps that had relevance to the story. Like "he went for a ride in his car" and they showed a painting of a car.

I can't find this story anywhere on the web, nor can I find any info on this TV show. If you could point me to the original story I'll be your BFF or whatever. If not, enjoy.

There was a man who spent his life in poverty.
He was old and alone and one day decided to do something he never would in the past.
He splurged what little money he had and bought himself a chicken for diner.

As the chicken was cooking he was approached by a man. The man told him that the chicken smelled delicious and he was tired after traveling a long way. The stranger asked the old man if he would share his dinner with him.

"Who are you that I should share my dinner with you?" asked the old man.
"I am the Lord God" said the stranger.
The old man looked at him and said.
"All my life I have been poor and hungry and now you come to me and ask for my help when you gave none to me? No, I will not share my chicken with you."
And God left.

As the chicken continued cooking he was approached by another man. This man told him that the chicken smelled delicious and he was tired after traveling a long way. This stranger asked the old man if he would share his dinner with him.

"Who are you that I should share my dinner with you?" asked the old man.
"I am the Devil" said the stranger.
The old man looked at him and said.
"You spend your days taking enjoyment in the misery of myself and others. I have seen too much of your misery. No, I will not share my chicken with you."
And the Devil left.

As the chicken was almost done cooking he was approached by a third man. This man told him that the chicken smelled delicious and he was tired after traveling a long way. This stranger asked the old man if he would share his dinner with him.

"Who are you that I should share my dinner with you? After I have denied God and the Devil before you?" asked the old man.
"I am Death" replied the third stranger.
The old man looked long and hard, and for some time said nothing. Finally he said, "Rich or poor, young or old, king or slave, you come to us all and treat us all as equals. Yes, I will share my chicken with you."
And he did.

Did I mention I was like seven or eight when I saw this? I so need to send my therapist bills to PBS.
